UWA Preps For Montevallo Coca-Cola Classic

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After posting a signature win over Harding on Monday, the University of West Alabama men’s basketball team will open the month of December, participating in the Montevallo Coca-Cola Classic on Dec. 4-5 at UM’s McChesney Student Activity Center/BankTrust Arena. The Tigers (4-2) will open the two-day event against Shaw University on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s contest with Eckerd is set for 5:30 p.m. Both games will be available via live stats at athletics.uwa.edu. This weekend’s pair of games closes out a season-long six-game road trip. Seniors Richard Sirju and Jason Swanson were UWA’s offensive catalyst in the 52-46 win over HU. Sirju, a guard from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., drained a game-high 19 points including five three-pointers in the contest. Sirju leads the Gulf South Conference with 21 made three-pointers on the season. Swanson turned in his third double-double of the season with a 13 point, 12 rebound outing. The Troy, Ala.-forward ranks second in the GSC in double-doubles. Swanson is listed among the rebounding leaders in the league with a 9.8 average. UWA enters the weekend in the top five in the GSC in shooting marks as it is connecting on 46 percent from the field and 43 percent from behind the three-point arc. The Red and White are averaging 8.17 treys per game. The Bears of Shaw will bring an unblemished mark of 4-0 into Friday’s tilt. SU, a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, has already posted wins over CIAA East Division favorite Virginia Union and Virginia State. The Bears topped Elizabeth City State, 76-72, on Tuesday night. Eckerd also enters the weekend undefeated after opening the season with four wins. The Tritons will square off with host-Montevallo on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Following the pair of games at UM, the Tigers return to Pruitt Hall for the first time since Nov. 18 on Dec. 12, hosting GSC West heavyweight Christian Brothers University. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
