LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's basketball team dropped a hard fought 70-67 Gulf South Conference East Division contest to West Georgia on Saturday night in Pruitt Hall.
With the setback, UWA drops to 10-10 on the season and 1-3 in league games. The Wolves pushed their overall mark to 10-9 and 2-2 in the GSC.
UWG overcame a 35-30 halftime deficit in the second half thanks to a sizzling final 20 minutes. The Wolves connected on 52 percent from the field and out-scored UWA 40-32 to pick up a GSC road win. After trailing for the first 25 minutes of the game, UWG tied the game at 41-41 on a jumper by Chris Colvin. The Red and Blue took its first lead of the contest with 3:45 left in the game on a John Pringle lay up. UWA's Jason Swanson gave his squad a quick one-point, 67-66 lead with 1:13 to play but a pair of free throws by UWG's Jeremy Smith propelled the Wolves back on top. The Tigers had a pair of chances to send the game into an extra period, but three-point attempts by Swanson and Richard Sirju rimmed out.
The Tigers took their largest lead of the contest on one of Alquan Mendenhall's five three-pointers at 33-19 with 3:01 left in the opening half. Mendenhall scored all of his 15 points in the first half. Swanson and Sirju each poured in 20 points each to lead UWA in scoring. Swanson turned in his tenth double-double of the season as the Troy, Ala.-native pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Pringle paced UWG with 22 points along with Vojin Svilar's 18 point effort.
UWA closes out the first half of the GSC season against UAH in Huntsville on Saturday, Jan. 30. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at Spragins Hall. The game will be carried by Fox Sports 104.9 and at www.uwaathletics.com.
