PENSACOLA, Fla. – Sweeping the season series, No. 25 West Florida defeated the University of West Alabama volleyball team 3-0 Monday night. The loss drops the Tigers to 8-17 (1-7 Gulf South Conference) on the year while UWF improves to 20-6 (7-1 GSC).
The hosts seized control of the contest and quickly pushed out to a 10-2 lead in the opening set, but the Tigers did not let the significant early deficit deter themselves from putting up a fight. UWA narrowed the margin throughout the set with several scoring spurts, but fell 25-19. The Tigers committed no attack errors in the frame, hitting at a solid .344 clip, but the Argos' .386 mark gave them the edge.
The energy expended in the furious comeback effort left the Red and White somewhat gassed, and the squad committed six errors to go along with six kills in the second set for a .000 hitting percentage. West Florida capitalized on the miscues and put together an attack rate of .571 to dominate the set by a 25-12 score.
Again not backing down, the Tigers stayed close throughout the third frame but were unable to push past UWF in falling 25-20.
Thais Hollerbach led the UWA offensive attack with nine kills while committing just two errors for a solid .318 hitting percentage, and the outside hitter once again displayed her all-around ability as she paced the Tiger defensive effort with 12 digs. Jennifer Campbell racked up eight digs while hitting at a .333 clip, and setter Alexis McHale turned in 24 assists.
West Alabama now returns home for the first time in nearly three weeks as it hosts Montevallo on Tuesday night with the match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. It is Dig Pink at Pruitt Hall as all proceeds from the night will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.
