Tigers Seek GSC Road Win at Harding

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama football team seeks its first road, Gulf South Conference win of the season on Saturday, Oct. 9 as UWA (3-2, 1-1 GSC) travels to Searcy, Ark. to face Harding. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN 104.9-FM. The audio broadcast along with live stats and video will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.

Saturday marks the 16th meeting between the two GSC institutions with HU (2-2, 0-2 GSC) holding the all-time advantage at 9-6. The Bisons have proven very tough in the series at home winning 7 of the 8 contests between the two schools. The Tigers' last win in Searcy came on Oct. 17, 1981 – 19-0. Last season, the Red and White snapped a six-game losing streak to the Bisons with a 33-19 victory in Livingston.

The Tigers dropped a 41-37 decision last week at Delta State, handing the Red and White its first loss away from Tiger Stadium this season. UWA racked up 523 yards of total offense, but L.J. Castile's third touchdown reception of the game – with 19 seconds left – sealed the victory for the Statesmen. Deon Williams led the way offensively for the Tigers throwing for 336 yards and rushed for 101 yards while accounting for 4 touchdowns. In the setback, the Tuscaloosa, Ala. native moved to second all-time in passing with 5,328 yards.

On the season, Williams has accumulated 1,686 passing yards with 10 TDs and 5 interceptions. The senior signal caller has completed 72-percent of his passes to three main targets. Gerald Worsham leads the receiving corp. with 42 receptions and 597 yards. The Birmingham, Ala. product is tied with fellow wideout Randy Lowery with 3 receiving TDs on the year. Lowery, a Red Bay, Ala. native, is second on the team with 24 catches and 350 yards while Kendrick May has hauled in 17 passes for 289 yards. The Tuscaloosa, Ala. junior has 2 receiving scores on the season.

Junior College transfer Gabe Poe has become a force for the West Alabama defensive unit. The East Mississippi Community College transfer leads the Tigers in tackles with 40. The Pheba, Miss. native's 40 tackles ranks 5th in the GSC. Teammate Vonzell Jackson is second on the team in stops with 26 while leading in tackles for loss with 6.5 and sacks with 4.5 on the year. The senior defensive end ranks 20th in the nation in sacks and is tied for third in the conference in tackles for loss.

Harding enters the contest having pitched its second, home, shutout of the season – 27-0 vs. Lambuth last Saturday. A pair of running backs paces the Bisons, led by Kale Gelles' 431 yards and 4 TDs. Jeremy Holt is the second leading rusher for HU with 190 yards on the ground. Quarterback Josh Powell has thrown for 392 yards on the season with 4 scores and an INT. Kurt Adams, the second leading receiver for the Black and Gold, has hauled in 3 of Powell's TD passes. Jason Thomasson leads the Bisons' defensively with 30 tackles on the year and is third on the team with 3.5 tackles for loss.

Following Saturday's contest, West Alabama returns to face Henderson State in Homecoming 2010 on Saturday, Oct. 16. Kickoff at Tiger Stadium is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
