LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's tennis team returned to the win column with an 8-1 win over NCAA Division I foe Alabama A&M on Friday. AAMU snapped UWA's three-match winning streak on the women's side with a 7-2 decision.
UWA improved to 17-8 overall on the men's side, while the women's club falls to 15-10 on the season.
In the men's match, the Tigers claimed two of the three doubles points as the lone AAMU point came at the No. 1 doubles spot. UWA's pairing of Juan Felipe Tellez and Wade Covington ousted AAMU's duo of Stevon Walker and Johnnie Singleton, 8-2. The Tiger tandem of Benny Delgado Rochas and Lucas Cruz quick worked Anthony Pickard and Bertaud Ngomsi, 8-0. At No. 1, Desta Sandy and Nicholas Burger edged Lucas Nunes and Alvaro De La Torre, 9-8. UWA claimed all singles matches, including a three-set battle between De La Torre and Burger at No. 2. After splitting the first two sets, De La Torre claimed a 7-5 third set. In the other matches, Tellez, Covington and Nunes won in straight sets. Cruz and Wes Taylor turned in pro set wins at No. 5 and 6.
The UWA women picked up a point in doubles and the second point at No. 6 singles. The UWA team of Katy Shoptaugh and Emily Gerding topped AAMU's duo of Alison Gladness and Jasmine Cherry, 8-2. Shoptaugh carried the momentum into singles as she turned back Gladness, 8-2 at No.6.
