HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – For the third-straight year, the University of West Alabama women's tennis team has earned a berth in the Gulf South Conference Tournament after UWA downed UAH, 5-4 on Thursday in Huntsville. The men dropped a 6-3 decision to the Chargers.
The women's squad moved to 15-9 overall and 2-2 in GSC play. The Tiger men fall to 16-8 on the season and 0-4 in conference matches.
In the women's match, UWA gained the early advantage by taking two doubles matches. The Tiger tandem of Angy Cuellar and Brittney Bowden ousted UAH's pairing of Yngrid Alviz and Giannina Mulky, 8-6. Katy Shoptaugh and Emily Gerding downed Lillianne Reagan and Alejandra Pacheco, 9-7. In singles play, Cuellar's three-set affair highlighted the singles portion. After dropping the first set 6-2 to UAH's Mulky, Cuellar stormed back to win in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Shoptaugh made quick work of Reagan at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1. Brittany Bowden turned in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Amanda Sipple at No. 3.
In the men's contest, the lone UWA doubles point came at No. 3 as the duo of Wade Covington and Juan Felipe Tellez turned back UAH's Andrew Alfonso and Kyle Smith, 8-6. Covington maintained the momentum as he turned in a 6-2, 601 singles win over Smith at No. 5. The other UWA point came at No. 4 after Danish Ahmad disposed of Davyd Fowler, 6-2, 7-5.
UWA returns to the hardcourts on Friday, April 9 in Demopolis, Ala. against NCAA Division I foe Alabama A&M. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
