Tigers Set to Square Off with UAM in GSC-TV Game of the Week

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The 10th-ranked University of West Alabama football team prepares to face the University of Arkansas at Monticello in the GSC-TV Game of the Week on Thursday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. at Willis “Convoy” Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium. The game will be televised on CSS and will be aired on ESPN 104.9 FM and at www.uwaathletics.com.

The Tigers (1-0) head into their first of four GSC-TV Game of the Week contests seeking their fourth victory when appearing on television. The Tigers and Boll Weevils have met prior as part of the Game of the Week slate. UAM garnered a 44-36 victory over the Red and White in Livingston in 2007.

This marks the 23rd meeting between UAM and the Red and White with the Boll Weevils holding a 12-10 record in the series. The two squads have split the last two outings with the Tigers getting the best of the Green and White a season ago, blanking UAM 33-0 in Livingston.

UWA started the 2010 season with a 37-7 win over NAIA member Shorter University. Quarterback Deon Williams was impressive in the winning effort as the senior moved his name forward in the UWA record books. The Tuscaloosa, Ala. native moved to fourth all-time in total offense, passing Kenneth Jones with 4,433 yards of total offense. 11 different wide receivers caught a pass in the victory. Junior wideout Gerald Worsham led the group with nine receptions and 108 yards. The Tiger defense pitched a shutout while holding Shorter to no completions and only 66 yards of total offense. The lone Hawk score came on a Brandon Morten 66 yd punt return late in the fourth quarter.

Thursday marks the season opener for UAM which is 1-4 in lid lifters under current Boll Weevil Head Coach Gwaine Matthews. The Boll Weevils return a senior trio of quarterback Scott Buisson, wide receiver Jywin Ceasar and linebacker Carlton Johnson. Johnson and Ceasar were each tabbed as members of the 2010 D2Proday.com Preseason All-America 3rd Team. Buisson was selected to the 2010 Preseason All-Gulf South Conference Team; his second preseason honor from the conference's coaches.
