#17 Tigers Pick Up Conference Win Over West Georgia

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Bouncing back from a tough loss just five days prior, the No. 17 University of West Alabama football team defeated visiting University of West Georgia 28-7 on Thursday night in the first conference game of the season for the Tigers. UWA improves to 3-1 and 1-0 Gulf South Conference with the victory while the Wolves fall to 2-2 and 1-1 in the conference.

UWA used a short field to post the first points of the game on the scoreboard. Brock Sharp put a 40-yard kick through the uprights to cap a five play, 33 yard drive.

Brandon Behenna connected with George Summerset from seven yards out to answer the Tiger score as the Wolves marched 99 yards in 13 plays following a Sharp punt that was downed on the UWG one yard line.

The Red and White retaliated with a 70-yard drive that saw T-Ray Mitchell pushed the ball across the goal line from a yard out. Sharp extended the lead to 13-7 as he hit his second field goal of the night from 39 yards out.

The Tigers added two scores in the fourth quarter to ice the game. Deon Williams found Kendrick May from eight yards out to push the lead to 19-7. A two-point conversion catch by Gerald Worsham pushed the lead to 21-7. Linebacker Deon Lacey then intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for a TD. The INT return was the first for the Red and White since Oct. 17 against the University of Arkansas at Monticello

In addition to the two-point play, Worsham had several other big plays on the night as he etched his name further in the UWA record books with the fourth-highest single game reception total as he racked up 184 yards on 11 catches. He also moved into third all-time in total receptions.

Deon Williams completed the night going 19-31 for 328 yards and the touchdown while also throwing one interception.

The Tigers corrected their turnover problem from the Lambuth contest as they only committed in the game. In fact, UWA won the turnover battle for the first team all season as the nation's 11th best defense forced four – two fumbles and two interceptions – on the night.

Vonzell Jackson led the Tigers in tackles for the game as the Aliceville, Ala. native recorded 13 stops on the night while also collecting a team-best three sacks on the night. Gabe Poe (Pheba, Miss.) finished second on the team with eight tackles. The junior college transfer has finished each game as the leading tackler prior to tonight's contest.

For the game, UWA outgained the Wolves by a slim 413-411 margin.

West Alabama returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 23 as UWA travels to Cleveland, Miss. To face Delta State in the GSC-TV Game of the Week. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
