Tigers Outlast North Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's basketball team rattled off 12 points in overtime to log its third Gulf South Conference win of the season as UWA (8-10, 3-2 GSC) outlasted North Alabama 68-60 Saturday evening. UNA falls to 9-12 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

The victory ties the longest win streak of the season for the Red and White and gives the Tigers their first back-to-back conference wins since the 2008-09 season when UWA downed Montevallo (Feb. 21) and West Florida (Feb. 28).

After the Lions' Beaumont Beasley hit the first bucket of the extra session, the Tigers connected on three straight, free throws to regain the lead at 59-58.

An Alquan Mendenhall 3-pointer – with the shot clock expiring – extended UWA's advantage to 62-58 with just over two minutes left in the contest. Later in the contest, Drew Faile collected two of his team-leading 15 points to push the margin to 64-58 with less than 30 seconds to play.

Ricky Davison – who sent the affair into overtime with his late 3-pointer – hit just the Lions' second shot of the OT period to pull the Purple and Gold within four points. Korielle Beavers and Ryan Fitch would handle things from there for the Tigers as the duo connected on a combined four free throw attempts to clinch the contest. Fitch finished the evening with 14 points along with Trevell Coleman – rounding out the double digit scoring producers for the Red and White. Marino Thompson paced the Tigers on the glass with seven rebounds.

The Tigers – who led by as many as 12 points in the second half – held a 10-point advantage with less than five minutes to play in regulation. UNA attempted several runs at the Red and White lead over the next several of minutes before breaking through with an 8-0 run – which was capped by Davison's trey. Davison led all scorers with 30 points – half of the Lions' total. Marcus Landry added 10 points and a team-best 10 rebounds.

UWA – which trailed most of the opening half – used a 15-1 run over the final eight minutes of the session to take a 25-19 lead into the locker room at intermission.

The Tigers outrebounded UNA 49-27 in the contest – surpassing the previous largest rebounding margin of the season – 21 against Concordia College.
