Lions Too Much for West Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's basketball team dropped a 90-69 decision at North Alabama on Saturday afternoon. UWA fell to 9-14 overall and 4-6 in the Gulf South Conference while UNA improves to 13-14 and 6-5 in conference play.

Richard Dixon paced a quartet of Tigers in double figures with 19 points and also hauled down a team best eight rebounds in the losing effort. Paul Mitchell and Ryan Fitch each added 15 points followed by 12 from Alquan Mendenhall.

Wes Long led all scorers with a career-high 32 points. Long connected on eight of 11 treys in the win – one 3-pointer short of the school's single game record. Ricky Davison added 15 points with 14 coming from Marcus Landry. Beaumont Beasley and Warrick Mastin rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 and 10 points respectively.

After the Lions opened a halftime deficit to as many as 19 points early in the second half, the Tigers managed to narrow the deficit to 10 points on a couple of occasions – the last coming on a jumper by Mendenhall with 6:10 remaining in t he contest – but could not push the lead under double digits.

The Lions reached their largest lead of the game, 86-60, behind a 21-5 run over the next three minutes. The run was ignited by Long who scored 16 of the 21 points during the stretch.

West Alabama returns home for three straight contests. The Tigers open the homestand with a non-conference outing against Oakwood on Monday, Feb. 21. UWA then closes the homestand and the regular season with key outings against West Georgia (Feb. 24) and Valdosta State (Feb. 26).
