Tigers Pound UWG Before Falling In Nightcap

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Snapping its winless streak, the University of West Alabama baseball team saw its bats come to life for the first game of its doubleheader with West Georgia on Saturday at Tartt Field as the Tigers won 18-4 before falling 2-1 in the nightcap. UWA sits at 17-16 (4-9 Gulf South Conference) while the Wolves are now 14-25 (2-12 GSC).

Four Tigers recorded three hits in the first game as the squad pounded out 16 hits against the visitors.

Colin McKeen led the way with his three hits – including his third homer of the season – and he drove in five runs while scoring a pair.

Also recording three hits was the duo of Ladarrius Cole and Brian Simone, and both crossed the plate four times while Simone also picked up four RBI in the contest. Deon Williams was the fourth Tiger to pick up three hits, and he also knocked in a trio of runs.

Kevin Deese picked up a pair of hits in the contest, and one of the two was a blast well onto the hill in front of the scoreboard in right, marking his team-leading fifth long ball of the year. He scored three times to match the three runs he drove in on the afternoon.

The squad recorded four doubles as Simone, Deese, Williams and Tyler Shaw all registered two-baggers.

On the right side of an extended inning, the Tigers scored seven runs in the bottom half of the fifth while sending 11 men to the plate.

Securing his fifth win of the season, Jeb Huber (5-2) pitched six solid innings for the Red and White. He scattered six hits while giving up just two runs, and he struck out four and walked just one. Matt Betts pitched the seventh for UWA as the game was shortened due to the run rule.

Alex Wilson (1-3) lasted just two innings for the Wolves.

Unable to replicate the outburst from the first game, the Tigers managed just one hit in evening's finale as West Georgia defeated the hosts for the first time in 13 games dating back to the 2006 season.

Earning the tough-luck loss, Barry Meeks (3-4) surrendered just two runs, suffering defeat for the third straight outing. Meeks gave up a two-out homer in the first and allowed another run in the second, but he limited UWG to that pair as he tossed five innings, striking out five while also walking four.

The Sweet Water, Ala., native threw the game a weekend ago in which the squad was no-hit, and Saturday's contest marked the fourth start on the year in which the Tigers have scored one run or less in support. Additionally, the team has scored just three times during his personal three-game slide.

It was not for a lack of trying, however, against West Georgia as the Wolves robbed UWA of a pair of would-be homers in the nightcap.

Deese was denied a solo shot in the fourth by center fielder Bradford Mattox, and Williams made a bid for a dinger that was pulled back into the yard by left fielder Michael Hollis with a runner on to end the sixth.

Hollis had entered as a defensive replacement to start the frame.

Micah Reaves had the lone hit in the game, a single to left that scored McKeen. Trent Johnson was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the play.

Keeping UWA within one, Brian Burgess pitched the final two innings, and he gave up just two walks and not allowing a hit. His stuff was particularly impressive on Saturday as he struck out four of the eight batters he faced.

Jarod Slaven (3-4) went the distance for the Wolves, and he wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to preserve his victory.

The teams will play the rubber match on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
