UWA Drops Series Finale To West Georgia

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team let a large lead slip away on Sunday afternoon at Tartt Field, losing 11-8 to West Georgia to drop its fourth consecutive Gulf South Conference series. The Tigers fall to 17-17 (4-10 GSC) on the season while UWG improves to 15-25 (3-12 GSC).

Using a six-run first inning, the Red and While built up an 8-0 advantage after the first two innings of action.

In the big first, five Tigers – Brian Simone, Kevin Deese, Micah Reaves, Jay Jennings and Ladarrius Cole – drove in runs as Jennings knocked in a pair. The squad recorded six hits in the frame and sent 11 men to the plate, the second time in as many days that the team accomplished that feat.

Reaves and Williams again notched an RBI in the second as the team built onto its lead, but from the point forward Jamie Sexton (3-4) settled down and did not allow another Tiger to cross the plate.

Sexton entered the game in the first as he replaced West Georgia starter Brandon Crumbley who only lasted two outs into the game. He went 8.1 innings and struck out nine while giving up seven hits and the two runs in the second.

The difference in the ballgame was the amount of unearned runs allowed by West Alabama as each of its three pitchers had an unearned tally against them due to the team committing four miscues in the field. Taylor Bratton picked up the start and went 5.2 innings, surrendering eights and six runs while walking four and striking out six in not factoring in the decision.

Colter Millican (2-4) pitched the final three innings and gave up the go-ahead run in the eighth as the Wolves scored three off of the reliever.¬

UWG outhit the Tigers 14-11 on the day as the hosts featured four plays that had two hits in the game. Simone, Deese, McKeen and Williams all had a couple, and Deese and McKeen both also scored a pair of runs.

The Tigers will look to bounce back with a midweek game at Stillman on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
