UWA Basketball Suffers 65-47 Setback to West Georgia

LIVINGSTON, ALA. – Committing a season-high 29 turnovers on the evening, the University of West Alabama men's basketball team fell to West Georgia Saturday evening, 65-47, at UWA's Pruitt Hall.

With the loss, the Tigers conclude the first portion of the Gulf South Conference schedule with a 3-4 record in the conference (6-14 overall). Meanwhile, West Georgia moves to 18-3 overall and 5-2 in the GSC.

The Tigers played stiff defense for most of the night but could not overcome 29 miscues compared to UWG's 18 turnovers. West Georgia came into Saturday's contest averaging around 75 points per game, but a strong defensive effort from the Red and White kept that total to just 65 on the night.

In a tight ballgame throughout most of the opening 30 minutes of play, Saturday's game featured three ties and four lead changes. UWA led by as many as two, which came at the 19:08 mark of the first half. Meanwhile, the 18-point margin of victory was UWG's biggest lead in the game.

After trailing 32-25 at the half, West Alabama managed to make it a 39-32 game with 12:58 remaining in the contest. From that point on, West Georgia had an offensive surge to close out the affair on a 26-15 run.

For the game, UWA was led by a double-double from point guard Steven Samuels, who had 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds. West Georgia had three players score in double figures with forward Da'Ron Sims leading all scorers in the game with 20.

UWA now heads to the northern part of the state to take on North Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville in a pair of weekend games. West Alabama starts the northern state swing when the Tigers play UAH Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
