JACKSON, Miss. – The University of West Alabama men's tennis team picked up its third-straight win of the season Friday, ousting Jackson State and Tougaloo, while the Tiger women's team fell to JSU.

The West Alabama men's team drove past host-school Jackson State in a 6-1 win to start the day. In that contest, West Alabama won at every doubles court to grab a quick 3-0 lead to put the team just two points away from taking the match.

At No.1 in doubles, Nestor Vargas and Adam Drysdale ousted Navaneetha Baskaran and Jose Lugue 8-6, while fellow UWA tandem Anton Ivanov and Kike Ruiz took an 8-4 triumph over the JSU team of Carlos Martinez and Marko Milosavlsevic. The remaining UWA team on court No. 3 then won after a Jackson State withdraw.

In singles, UWA got off to a tough start after  Drysdale fell at the first court. That loss was then followed by several Tiger victories that helped UWA clinch the match. Vargas ousted Martinez 6-3, 6-1, before Ivanov took down Lugue 6-4, 7-5. Manuel Grossman then defeated Phillip Barnes 6-0, 6-0 to give UWA the 6-1 win.

The Tiger men were even more dominant against Tougaloo, taking a 9-0 triumph. After sweeping the doubles court, UWA netters Ivanov, Ruiz, Grossman, Fernandez, Freitas and Taylor each took straight-set wins in singles to down the Bulldogs, 9-0.

Hoping to follow the men's dominance at the net, UWA's women fell to Jackson State for the team's first loss of the year. The Tiger netters fell by a score of 5-2 with Jill Furling and Lisa Becker winning at the No. 2 doubles court and Emily Gerding and Natalia Cardenas taking an 8-1 win at the third court in doubles to give the Tigers their only two points on the day.
