LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Senior guard
Alquan Mendenhall steps on the floor at Pruitt Hall for the final time Sunday as the University of West Alabama men's basketball team entertains West Florida. Tip time is slated for 4 p.m.
The two teams collide in what will be an important matchup in the Gulf South Conference standings. With the GSC Tournament about two weeks away, West Alabama enters the game at 8-17 on the year and 5-7 in the Gulf South Conference while West Florida sits above UWA in the standings with a 16-10 record and a 6-6 mark in the GSC.
West Alabama enters Sunday's game after falling to Valdosta State in a tough overtime affair on Thursday. In a back-and-forth contest, UWA picked up the loss after the Blazers hit two free-throws with just over one second remaining to claim the 76-74 win.
For the year, UWA is led by a quartet of players that each average in double figures. Junior point guard
Steven Samuels headlines the class of Tiger scorers with 14.8 points per outing. Meanwhile,
Jared Woolfolk ,
Ryan Fitch, and Alguan Mendenhall each score around 11 points per game for the year.
These two teams last met on Jan. 22 when the Argos went on a shooting spree to defeat the Tigers, 82-64. UWF shot a school-record 75 percent in that contest – the first time since 1980 that a GSC team shot 75 percent for a game.
Following Sunday's encounter, West Alabama hits the road for the final regular season clash of the year. The Tigers travel to Carrollton, Ga., next Saturday to take on West Georgia.
