LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's tennis team picked up its fifth-straight win of the year, while the Tiger women rolled to their sixth consecutive victory on the season as the UWA netters ousted Alabama A&M Saturday afternoon at the UWA Tennis Complex.
West Alabama's women's tennis team used a strong showing on the singles courts to pick up the 5-4 win, before the Tiger men blasted their opponent, 9-0. With the win, the women's team moves to 13-8 overall, while the men improve to 14-5.
The day started with a back-and-forth match on the women's side. The Tigers gave up two of the doubles courts to fall behind 2-1 going into singles competition. The lone triumph came at the third court where the duo of
Natalia Cardenas and
Dasha Popova took an 8-2 win.
West Alabama then made up ground in singles play, sweeping the last three courts in straight sets. Popova started the Tiger surge with a 6-3, 6-2 win, before
Emily Gerding ousted her counterpart, 6-2, 6-2. This all came while Cardenas was battling for a 4-6, 1-2, ret., win at the top position.
On senior day, it was Tiger senior
Courtney McDonald who then delivered the knockout blow – a 6-3, 7-5 win that gave her team the decisive victory with the match tied at 4-4.
On the men's side, UWA made it look easy with a 9-0 sweep. After picking up three doubles wins, the Tigers then swept the single courts for the dominating victory.

Anton Ivanov,
Adam Drysdale, Manuel Grossman and Antoine Freitas each took straight-set wins in singles with four games being the most given up in a single set on the day.
The Tiger men now travel to Fort Valley for a match on April 17 at Noon, while the women's team prepares for the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
