Tiger Tennis Rolls Past UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama tennis teams returned to Gulf South Conference action in a big way Tuesday afternoon with two dominating performances over the home-standing Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.
 
With the win, the UWA men improve to 11-5 on the year, while the Tiger women's team breaks the .500 mark with a 9-8 record on the season.
 
The Tigers started the day with the women's squad looking to capture its second-straight win on the year. Not only did the Tiger women accomplish that feat, the team dominated the Chargers with a sweep on the singles courts and two wins in doubles.
 
Those two doubles triumphs came at the top and third positions where the tandem of Jill Furlong and Lisa Becker ousted their UAH counterparts, 8-4, before the team of Angy Cuellar and Dasha Popova took an 8-1 win.
 
Up 2-1, the Tiger women then swept the singles courts with straight-set wins at each position. At the top spot, Natalia Cardenas took a 6-4, 6-4 victory, before Cuellar picked up a 6-1, 7-6 win at the second court. Furlong then defeated her opponent, 6-0, 6-2, while Becker picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4. Popova and Gerding then rounded out the Tiger scoring, allowing a combined two points from their opponents.
 
On the men's side, the Tigers continued their strong season with another impressive performance in the 6-2 win. The UWA tandem of Nestor Vargas and Adam Drysdale, along with the teams of Anton Ivanov/Luis Ruiz and Honorio Fernandez and Manuel Grossman each out dueled their Charger opponents in doubles with three wins.
 
That strong play then carried over to singles action where Vargas led off with a 7-5, 6-1 win, followed by a 6-1, 6-4 triumph from Luis Ruiz at the fourth court. Fernandez then rounded out the scoring with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the sixth and final position.
 
The UWA women now host Montevallo tomorrow at 2 p.m. with the men back in action on Thursday against LeMoyne Owen in Memphis, Tenn.
