LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's soccer team (5-1, 1-0 Gulf South Conference) continued its strong start to the 2012 season on Sunday with an impressive 3-0 win against Union (1-2-2, 0-1 GSC).
The Tigers have now won three-straight on the year and have scored three or more goals in four of the team's five wins.
“To win our first GSC game in that fashion is a tremendous accomplishment,” stated UWA head coach
Matthew Thorne. “We have some tough games ahead of us, but right now we are a team that is going in the right direction.”
Three goals by three different Tigers made the difference for UWA on Sunday, as
Evan Beutler,
Thibault Charmey and
Clay Green combined to give West Alabama the win.
Beutler was the first Tiger to score in the game with his shot coming at the 22:07 mark of the first half before Charmey scored on a penalty kick just 10 minutes later.
UWA then wrapped up the game in the second half when Green scored unassisted.
For the day, the Tigers registered seven shots on goal compared to five from Union. Coach Thorne's team took the victory despite four yellow cards in the second half. A large part of that was due to a red card issued to the Bulldogs' Guilherme Dorigo at the 72:48 mark and two yellow cards issued to two separate Bulldogs in the first 45 minutes.
West Alabama returns to Tiger Stadium on Friday when the squad hosts Delta State at 7:30 p.m.
