Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Montevallo posted a 64 percent shooting percentage from the field (27-for-42) to defeat West Alabama men's basketball 68-53 in Pruitt Hall on Wednesday.
West Alabama (1-2) bolstered 51 field goals but converted only 18 into points to finish with 35 shooting percentage. Montevallo (5-0) out-rebounded the Tigers 33-22.
"Montevallo didn't do anything on the floor that we didn't know they would do," said UWA head men's basketball coach Mark Downey. "They just out-toughed us tonight. We didn't execute well and so we were forced to take tougher shots. Our guys aren't stepping up when they need to, and there's did. We need better leadership on the floor."
The Falcon's Troran Brown led the court with 20 points shooting 9-for-14 from the field. On defense Brown tallied five steals; the most by a Tiger opponent this season.
Despite being held to one point in the second half,
Sandy Underwood led the Tigers with 16 points total, shooting 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Jarrell Byrd posted 13 points and led the defense with seven rebounds; eight total.
The Tigers now return to the road to face Abilene Christian as a part of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in Towson, Md. The game is set for 5:30 p.m. (C.S.T.) on Friday in SECU Arena on the campus of Towson University.
"Abilene Christian is struggling right now, but they are seasoned so they will be ready to go," said Downey. "They have a new team but they have more games under their belt at this point. It will be a neutral floor so that should help. We've got to bring our own enthusiasm to the game."
