Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. –
Sandy Underwood scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead West Alabama to a 58-54 Gulf South Conference men's basketball victory over West Georgia at The Coliseum on the UWG campus Saturday.
The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for West Alabama, improving the Tigers to 8-11 overall and 4-8 in the GSC. The win was just UWA's second on the road this season. West Georgia fell to 7-13 and 4-8.
“It's like
Steven Samuels said after the game, it doesn't matter how you win, just that you win,” UWA head coach Mike Newell said. “It was ugly, but we will take it.”
West Alabama built a 30-25 lead at the half by controlling the paint and continued it throughout the remainder of the game, outrebounding the Wolves 46-37, which led to a an 18-7 Tiger advantage in second-chance points.
“We did a good job on the defensive end and inside,” Newell said. “Second chance points and us holding them to 32 percent shooting was obviously big for us. We needed this to head to West Florida and Valdosta State with a better taste in out mouths next week.”
Underwood was the only Tiger to score in double figures, but both Mychal Bester and
Jack Hill chipped in nine points and nine rebounds.
West Georgia guard Zach Taulien made 4-of-6 three-point attempts in the first half, but finished with just 16 points after fouling out with 8:35 left in the game. Taylor Cochran scored 11 for the Wolves and Sean Boston chipped in 10 points.
UWA travels to West Florida for the second of a three-game road swing on Thursday.
