LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama men's tennis team extended its consecutive match winning streak to seven and the UWA women snapped a two-match losing skid by both posting 9-0 victories over Christian Brothers in Gulf South Conference matches Sunday at the Vaughn Tennis Complex.
The West Alabama men's team improved its record to 13-2, while the women are now 12-5. The men are ranked 39th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Rankings, eighth in the ITA South Region.
Helga Jeske and
Shannon McEvoy, as well as
Jill Furlong and
Natalia Cardenas, won women's No. 1 and 2 doubles, respectively. Christian Brothers failed to field a third doubles team giving the Tigers the sweep. The West Alabama women almost shut out the Lady Bucs in singles, with Jeske winning 6-0, 6-1; Cardenas 6-1, 6-0; McEvoy 6-0, 6-0;
Dasha Popova 6-0, 6-0 and Joy Carroll 6-1, 6-0.
The West Alabama men cruised to victories in No. 1 and 2 doubles, with
Anton Ivanov and
Adam Drysdale winning 8-2 and
Honorio Fernandez and
Simon Bardell winning 8-0. CBU failed to field a third doubles team.
Nestor Vargas,
Manuel Grossmann and
Trey Webb scored singles victories, with Vagras winning 6-2, 6-1; Grossmann 6-1, 6-0 and Webb 6-2, 6-1.
Wes Taylor won in No. 4 singles when CBU's Michael Hollier withdrew due to sickness. The Bucs forfeited the No. 5 and 6 singles matches.
Both the men's and women's teams travel to Orlando, Fla., for their next matches. The men meet the University of Puerto Rico on Friday and the women's team plays West Vriginia State on Saturday.
