Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Bruce Adams notched a double-double and North Alabama made 10-of-12 free throws in the last minute-plus of the game to spoil West Alabama's Senior Day, 81-77, Saturday at Pruitt Hall.
West Alabama dropped to 10-15 overall, 6-12 in Gulf South Conference play. UNA improved to 19-7 and 12-6 on the final of the regular season.
In a game where the lead changed hands 11 times, seven times in the last 3:51, the Tigers led by as many as eight points with 14:08 left to play. UNA, who scored 50 points in the second half, fought back to tie the game at 62-62 with 4:13 left and took the lead for good at 73-71 with 1:13 to play.
“You can't give up 50 points in a half and expect to win,” UWA head coach Mike Newell said. “Foul trouble killed us in the second half, but we were fouling. You have to move your feet to play defense.
“When Steven (Samuels) fouled out it was a tough last four minutes, then
Jack Hill followed him,” Newell said. “UNA is a good basketball team. Give them credit. We did some good things, just not enough good things.”
Sandy Underwood scored 15 points to lead West Alabama scoring. Samuels followed with 14 and
Joshua Millsap chipped in 13. Underwood was UWA's top rebounder with seven.
Adams scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead North Alabama. Rashaun Claiborne also scored 18 points, followed by DeAndre Hersey with 17.
West Alabama goes into the GSC Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will face Christian Brothers Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in first round action at the Hanna Center on the Samford University campus in Birmingham.
