CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Alabama women's volleyball swept day two of the West Georgia Invitational tournament, beating King University, 3-2, and Notre Dame College, 3-1.

"Today went really well," UWA head volleyball coach Jordan Lay said. "I thought our girls played above expectations. We showed a lot of heart today and were able to really 'gut-out' some wins. Starting out 3-1 is a huge accomplishment for us. It puts us on the right track on the road to the ring."

West Alabama (3-1) traded sets with King University (1-2) before claiming the final victory with a 18-16 win in set five. For the second time in the tournament, freshman Yanesha Johnson led UWA's aggressive offense with 18 kills; edging out sophomore Morgan Ray with 16 kills.

Johnson recorded 10 digs as well and was one of three Tigers to post double digit digging numbers. Lindsey Ball led the dig effort for the UWA defense with 21.

The Tigers also traded sets with Notre Dame College (0-3) until a dominate 25-12 fourth set that gave the UWA its third straight victory. Johnson continued her attacking dominance against the Falcons with 14 kills; followed again by Ray with 12.

Senior Carly Wehling totaled 70 assists on the day with 36 against Notre Dame. Senior Cynthia Smith rounded out the tournament by matching the team's season high of three service aces.

The Tigers will remain on the road to take on the University of Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday, Sept. 12. The match is set for 7 p.m.
