Vargas Earns ITA All-America Honors

SKILLMAN, N.J. – University of West Alabama senior tennis player Nestor Vargas has been named to the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II All-America Team as a singles player.

To be eligible for the honor, players must finish in the top 20 of the final ITA College Tennis Rankings in singles or the top 10 in doubles. Vargas is one of four players from the Gulf South Conference to earn All-America recognition.

"I am very proud of Nestor. He is very deserving of this honor," UWA tennis coach Glen Fanelli said. "He put together a great season and a great career. He has been an outstanding ambassador not only for Tiger tennis, but the University of West Alabama as well."

From Bogota, Colombia, Vargas finished the season 23-3 in singles play, 22-4 in doubles. He was also selected by league coaches to the 2014 First-Team All-GSC men's tennis team, marking the second straight year being named as all-conference.

As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of varsity collegiate tennis players. The ITA, which is comprised of nearly 1,700 men's and women's varsity coaches and 20,000 student-athletes from over 1,200 institutions, has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership, sportsmanship and athletic performance.
