LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Ervin Jackson has been named to the University of West Alabama football coaching staff, according to an announcement today by head coach Brett Gilliland. Jackson will coach Tiger defensive backs.

Jackson fills the vacancy created when Chad Williams was named defensive coordinator at Savannah State on June 7. Jackson's hire completes the makeup of Gilliland's 2016 UWA football staff.

"I am very pleased to have Erv back into the Tiger family. He is a hard worker and a great coach," Gilliland said. "The players have always responded to him and played hard for him. It is great having he and fiancé Nacole in Livingston."

Returning to the Tiger program from Point University where he served as defensive coordinator, this is Jackson's second tenure at UWA.  He was on the UWA staff from 2012-15 in various roles, the most recent being defensive backs coach in 2014-15. A part of two Gulf South Conference championship teams as a coach at UWA, he also worked with strength and conditioning, academic advising and camps while being a position coach.

After his playing career at Ohio University (2005-08) was complete, Jackson coached defensive backs and defensive linemen at Pearl River (Miss.) Community College.

"We are very fortunate to have a top notch football staff," Gilliland said. "There is a wealth of experience and knowledge on this staff, but most importantly we have some great men.

I feel very good with the addition of our three new coaches and am excited to have them with us," Gilliland said. "I know these men are great coaches, but more importantly, I know they are concerned with improving our players in every aspect of their lives."

Jackson, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Don Bailey, along with offensive line coach and junior college recruiting coordinator David Thornton have joined the UWA football staff since the conclusion of the 2015 season.

The remainder of Gilliland's third-year staff includes defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Nathan Burton, defensive line coach Roberto Pinilla, running backs coach Deon Williams, as well as Lamont Seward, who serves as associate head coach, wide receivers coach, special teams coordinator and high school recruiting coordinator.

Rounding out the staff are director of football operations Ryne Smith, graduate assistant (tight ends) Devin Myers and graduate assistant (bandits) Tevin Thomas.

The UWA football team reports to campus Saturday, Aug. 6, with fall camp beginning on Monday, Aug. 8. The Tigers open the season Thursday, Sept. 1 at North Greenville.
