Jamal Blackwell Earns GSC Defensive Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – West Alabama defensive back Jamal Blackwell has earned Gulf South Conference defensive player of the week honors for his performance in the Tigers 35-18 victory over West Florida last Saturday.
 
Blackwell, a 5-10, 165-pound senior from Mt. Olive, Mississippi, led West Alabama defenders with 12 tackles, eight solo. He also intercepted a pass and had a tackle for loss.
 
The interception was Blackwell's first of the year, came deep in Argonaut territory and led to a touchdown that gave UWA a 28-12 lead early in the fourth quarter.
 
Blackwell and his teammates travel to play a red-hot Valdosta State team waiting in South Georgia on Saturday. A win at VSU would give UWA the outright GSC title. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. central time.
 
Saturday's game has been selected as the Division II Football Showcase flex game and will stream live on ESPN3.
