Four Tigers Named to AP All-America Football Team

Four University of West Alabama players have been named to the 2017 Associated Press Division II All-America Team, which was released Wednesday.

Tiger junior linebacker Terry Samuel earned first team All-America honors, while punter Zach Gaines, tight end Qua Boyd and cornerback Tevin Madison were second-team honorees.

From Brewton, Alabama, Samuel was also named the 2017 Gulf South Conference and NCAA Division II Super Two Regional Defensive Player of the Year after registering a GSC-leading 102 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and six quarterback sacks. Earlier today he was named to the CCA Division II All-America team.

This is the third All-America selection for Madison, having been named earlier to the American Football Coaches Association and the CCA teams. He was also a first team All-Super Region and All-Gulf South Conference selection. He led the GSC and Division II in passes broken up with 17 and tied for second in the GSC with five interceptions. A senior from Fayette, Alabama, Madison led the GSC and tied for second nationally in fumbles recovered with four and tied for second in league with three fumbles forced. He was third on the UWA team with 66 tackles.

Boyd, a junior from Lafayette, Alabama, led all GSC tight ends in receptions with 52 for 660 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged 12.7 yards per catch and had five games with five or more receptions, including 10 against FSC member Samford.

Gaines, a sophomore from Calera, Alabama, led the GSC in punting and set the West Alabama single season record by averaging 43.7 yards on 65 punts. He had a long punt of 62 yards, 23 punts of 50 or more yards and dropped 17 punts inside the opponents 20-yard line.
