LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men and women's tennis teams open play in the 2017 Gulf South Conference Tennis Tournament Thursday in Montgomery, Alabama.

The women get the day underway by playing Alabama Huntsville at 9 a.m. at the O'Connor Tennis Center. The Tigers (14-6, 8-2) are the No. 3 seed in the eight-team field. UAH (9-11, 5-4) is the No. 6 seed. Should UWA defeat the Lady Chargers, the Tigers would play in Friday's semi-finals against the winner of Monday's Lee-Valdosta State matchup.

UWA's men (8-14, 5-4) play Thursday at 1:30 p.m., also at the O'Connor Tennis Center, against Mississippi College (10-8, 5-3). UWA is the No. 5 seed in the eight-team field. Mississippi College is the No. 4 seed. A win by the Tigers would advance UWA to the semi-finals on Friday against the winner of the Alabama Huntsville-West Florida match.

The UWA women's team was an 8-1 winner in the regular season meeting between UWA and UAH back on Feb. 20. West Alabama and the Mississippi College men have already met this season as well, with the Choctaws taking a 5-4 win on March 9. Both of those matches were played in Livingston.

UWA's Amina Mukhametshina is arguably the top player in the league, coming into the GSC Tournament with a perfect 18-0 mark at No. 1 singles. She also teamed with Georgina Morral to finish the regular season 15-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Senior Christopher Wood owns the most wins for the Tiger men with a 9-8 overall singles record, while teaming with Andrii Stratiienko to go 10-5 in doubles.
