JACKSON, Miss. – After winning the doubles point against NCAA Division I Jackson State, the University of West Alabama men's tennis team dropped four of six singles matches to lose, 4-3, to the Tigers Tuesday at the JSU Tennis Complex.

Julius Kaverinen and Henrik Sinkko won at No. 1 doubles, while Chris Wood and Andrii Stratiienko won at No. 2 doubles. Jackson State then went on to control singles play, winning at No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Stratiienko won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Wood won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.

"Another close loss against a solid opponent, and again, too many for any year," UWA coach Jeff Beaman said. "This team needs to step up and grab one of the many opportunities we have had, but fail to grasp."

UWA is 7-13 and has lost seven straight matches. Jackson State is 6-18.

"In college tennis you are a winner or a loser as a team, no silver medal as a group or for individuals," Beaman said. "I fully believe we will get things on track going into this important weekend where our results determine if we finish third or sixth in the Gulf South Conference regular season standings."

Already qualified for the GSC Tournament, West Alabama finishes the regular season at Lee on Friday and then at home against North Alabama on Sunday. Match time for Lee is 11 a.m. on the road and then 2 p.m. versus UNA at home.

Jackson State returns to action April 10 by hosting Xavier.
