Charlie Glenn Award Highlights Military Day at Tiger Stadium

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The second annual Charlie Glenn Award for Heroic Service will be presented during pregame ceremonies prior to the Delta State game Saturday to a current Tiger football player for extraordinary service to the UWA Football Program in memory of Staff Sgt. Charles Lee Glenn.

Former Tiger running back and special teams maven Bob Myers was voted by his teammates as the 2017 Charlie Glenn Award recipient. After finishing his degree at UWA, Myers was taken in the 2018 Rivals Professional Football League Draft by the Atlantic Sharks.

A UWA graduate and former Tiger football player, Glenn was also a military veteran and Bronze Star recipient. He played football at UWA from 1994-97, earning numerous academic honors as a player before enlisting in the United States Army on June 17, 2003.

An Army Special Forces Soldier, Glenn lost his life in the service of our nation on May 17, 2007 after losing consciousness during a training event at the Special Forces Underwater Operations School.

"Charley played for UWA in the 1990s and went on to fight for our country and pay the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom" Tiger head coach Brett Gilliland said. "We are honored to continue his legacy on here at UWA with this award."

Glenn attended basic combat training and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia before reporting to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, for the Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course in 2003. Glenn was selected for Special Forces training, and completed the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2005.

He reported to 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in December 2005, where he was assigned to a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha. He completed a tour in Iraq before beginning the Combat Dive Qualification Course.

Glenn's family will join the 2018 winner during a pregame ceremony at 1:40 p.m. Saturday on the field at Tiger Stadium.

West Alabama coaches will wear camouflage hats on the sideline during the game against Delta State. The hats will all bear combat-worn patches courtesy of Combat Buckles.

"These hats each have a patch on them that was worn by special operations forces overseas in combat," Gilliland said. "These are a unique part of our military history, and we thank Combat Buckles for making this possible."

Kickoff for the game between the Tigers and Statesmen is set for Saturday at 2:04 p.m. The contest will be the Florida Space Coast GSC-TV Game of the Week on ESPN3.
