Five Tigers Named to Don Hansen Super Region Squad

BROOKFIELD, Ill. – Five University of West Alabama football players have earned a spot on the 2018 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Super Region Two squad.

Tight end Qua Boyd earned first team honors. Offensive tackle Brandon Anderson and linebacker Terry Samuel were named to the second team. Center Call Dyer and defensive end Jordan Jones picked up third team accolades.

From Lafayette, Alabama, Boyd caught 48 passes in just nine games for 562 yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged 12.22 yards per reception and was voted the top tight end in the GSC by Hero Sports. In two years as a Tiger he has 100 receptions for 1,222 yards and 11 TDs.

Samuel, a senior from Brewton, Alabama, led West Alabama with 89 tackles and finished his Tiger career with 255 total stops. He also recorded a tackle for loss, three broken up passes, three quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery.

A junior from Lawrenceville, Georgia, Jones was among GSC leaders in tackles for loss with 12.5. He recorded 63 total tackles, including five sacks. Jones also had eight quarterback hurries and a broken-up pass.

Anderson and Dyer, both juniors from Bessemer, Alabama and Gordo, Alabama, respectively, anchored an offensive line that paved the way for 4,526 total yards, an average of 5.4 yards per play. Playing behind Anderson and Dyer, the West Alabama offense scored 40 of 45 times in the red zone and converted 9-of-13 fourth down tries.

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.

The first-team and second-team all-region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2018 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be selected.
