Tiger Tennis Just Around the Corner

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Beginning with exhibition matches against NCAA Division I programs to kick start the campaign, the University of West Alabama men's and women's tennis teams swing into action later this month.

The Tiger men hit the courts for the first time Jan. 19 with an exhibition match at Troy and the women get started with an exhibition match at Alabama State. The men will also play exhibitions at Alabama State and Jacksonville State, while the UWA women play exhibitions at Jacksonville State and South Alabama.

"We are looking forward to getting started with our spring season, and both the men and women have one of the toughest schedules in the country this year," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "To get ready to compete for a GSC championship, I felt both teams were ready for this level of a schedule and I am excited to see how it goes."

The West Alabama women have four top seven programs on the schedule with matches against No. 2 West Florida, No. 3 Columbus State, No. 6 St. Mary's of Texas and No. 7 Northeastern State. The Tigers also play at Division I Southern Miss.

The UWA men are set to play top-ranked Columbus State, 10th-ranked West Florida and No. 12 Valdosta State. No. 22 Embry-Riddle is also on the men's schedule.

West Alabama's men and women's teams will combine to play six more top 50 NCAA Division II programs, in addition to regionally-ranked Gulf South Conference opponents Montevallo, Delta State, Lee and Auburn-Montgomery on the men's side.

The Tiger men open the home schedule Feb. 2 when Marion Military visits the Vaughan Tennis Complex. The women's first home match is against Central Alabama on Feb. 6.
