Tiger Men’ Tennis Earns NCAA At-Large Bid

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's tennis team earned an at-large bid to participate in the 2019 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship. The Tigers will compete in the South Regional, which will take place at Barry (Fla.) University and Valdosta State (Ga.) University.
 
The Tigers will open play Saturday at 11 a.m. CDT against Lynn (Fla.) University at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on the campus of Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. Barry will host Benedict, the automatic qualifier from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference,  in the other opening match.
 
Rollins (Fla.) College, West Florida, Saint Leo and Valdosta State comprise the other side of the bracket being played at Valdosta, Georgia.
 
This is the seventh NCAA appearance for West Alabama's men and its first since 2014. The Tigers are 2-6 all-time in NCAA regional play.
 
Barry (19-1) is the top seed and ranked No. 2 in the nation, followed by Valdosta State (15-2) at the No. 2 seed and 16th nationally and West Florida (20-6) at No. 3 and 7th in the nation. Lynn (15-3) is the fourth seed and ranked 9th in the nation, followed by UWA (16-6) at No. 5 and 18th in the country. Rollins (18-6) is seeded sixth and is 10th in the nation, followed by Saint Leo (16-9) at No. 7 and 11th in the land. Benedict (12-8) is the No. 8 seed
 
There are 16 conferences that received automatic qualification. The remaining 32 teams were selected on an at-large basis.
 
The championship format will be three doubles followed by six singles. The doubles matches will feature three six-game pro sets with a seven-point tiebreak at six-all. Singles matches will be six best-of-three set single matches. The first team that wins two of the three doubles matches receives one point. The winner of each singles match gets one point. Four or more points are required to win the team match.
