BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – West Alabama women's tennis player Katia de la Garza was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week based on her performance against Mississippi College on February 8 and Columbus State on February 12.
The Monterrey, Mexico native went 4-0 in singles and doubles. Garza is ranked No. 24 in singles and picked up singles win against Columbus State's No. 25 Mariana Ramiriz in singles 6-2, 6-4. She was paired with Haina Franco In doubles and defeated Ramiriz and Valentina Abrile 7-5 from Columbus State on February 12.
Garza also won her singles match against Emma Roberts from MC 6-1, 6-1. Paired with Franco again, the duo took down Ely Alas and Fernando Cota 6-3 against MC on February 8.
The UWA women's tennis team returns to the courts on Thursday, February 17 against Alabama State. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
