Women's Soccer Opens Fall Camp With First Match Set For Aug. 26

LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- The West Alabama women's soccer team returned to the pitch this week in preparation for the upcoming 2022 fall season.

The Tigers are coming off of a ninth-straight winning season in 2021 in which they tallied eight victories and six in the Gulf South Conference. Head coach Graeme Orr recorded career victory number 100 last season following the 3-1 win over Spring Hill on Sep. 17.

UWA returns several key pieces from last year's team including Preseason All-GSC Dana Cruz who led the team in points (15) and goals (7) in 2021. Captains Lucy Horn and Paige Laidler each played in every game last year, with Horn logging the most minutes at 1,730, while adding a goal. Laidler recorded two goals in 1,627 minutes on the field. Returner Mikayla Anderson chipped in two goals and a pair of assists. Sierra O'Grady saw time in 17 games, logging 1,172 minutes in the midfield. In goal, Tabitha Weldon returns for another year after putting together an impressive 2021 campaign. She tallied seven wins and five ties, along with 68 saves in playing all but 90 minutes.

The 2022 season begins with three straight away from Livingston. UWA opens with Columbus State on Aug. 26. Then after a neutral site game on Aug. 28 against Edward Waters in Columbus, Ga., the Tigers will finish the three-game road swing at Tusculum on Sep. 2. The first home match arrives on Sep. 9 against Spring Hill starting at 7 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
