LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama rodeo teams hosted its annual UWA Rodeo Showdown over the weekend of Sept. 28-30 from the Hines-Spree Rodeo Complex.
The women took the team championship for the second straight show after winning last week at Missouri Valley College.
"It's always cool getting to win in front of your home crowd. The energy was amazing. I believe our ladies fed off of that. Definitely one we will remember for a long time," said head coach Daniel Poole.
Leading the way for the UWA women's wranglers was
Lauren Booty, who posted an average of five in both goes to win the breakaway roping event. She won the first round, but she had to share the second go with Kenlie Raby of Missouri Valley.
Joanna Hammett shared the goat tying title with Kate Eliand of Pearl River Community College as both scored an average of 17.2. Hammett took the top spot on the first go and finished second in the next round.
In the barrel racing,
Jaylie Matthews was just two-tenths of a point away from making the top-three on the first go, but she responded in her second attempt, scoring a second place 16.06 to soar to third place for the event.
For the UWA men, the posted a fourth place finish, scoring 440 points on the event, 60 behind Three Rivers College.
"Before every rodeo, the coaches pick six guys and four ladies to be on their points team. These are the only ones that have their points count for the team. However, everyone is still competing for individual rankings. I changed up the points team this weekend on the men's side and it was costly. Our guys did their job," added Poole.
Blayne Saine won both goes of the calf roping, averaging an 18 over the two rounds.
Gavin Lee posted a score of 71 in the first go of the bareback racing, while
Clarke Gordon took third in the calf roping after his 9.4 result to take runner-up in the second attempt.
UWA returns to the arena next week, as the Tigers head back to the Show Me State for the Three Rivers Rodeo from Sikeston, Missouri.
