BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference released on Monday morning its weekly award winners for football. The University of West Alabama garnered two winners, as
Davonta Jackson and
Elijah Guyton were recognized.
Jackson was tabbed the GSC Defensive Player of the Week, while Guyton was announced as the Special Teams of the Week.
Davonta Jackson, GSC Defensive Player of the Week
Jackson led the team with four tackles for a loss, as the Tiger defense totaled 12 stops behind the line of scrimmage against No. 6/7 West Florida. Finishing with six tackles overall, he also recorded a sack and forced a fumble from Peewee Jarrett, one of the top quarterbacks in the country.
In addition, the UWA defense held one of the top scoring offenses in the country to six points with no touchdowns, marking the first time UWF was held without a touchdown since their inaugural season in 2016.
Elijah Guyton, GSC Special Teams Player of the Week
Elijah Guyton converted the point-after attempt after
Bry Webb's seven-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to give the Tigers the 10-3 lead.
Later on UWA's opening drive of the third quarter, he added some insurance with a 30-yard field goal.
West Alabama will take a well-deserved bye week this weekend and return to the gridiron on the road Oct. 28 against Chowan. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET / noon CT from Murfreesboro, North Carolina.
