LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama football team hosted the first of two scrimmages as a part of its fall camp on Sunday from Tiger Stadium.
On a steamy morning with temperatures in the low 90s at the start of the event, UWA ran 100 plays in about a two-hour span with multiple breaks due to the conditions on the field.
"We had to change some things up because of the heat, because of extra breaks. It forced the guys to lock in even more than normal than just rolling the ball out and playing", said head coach
Brett Gilliland.
The Tigers saw good things and things to improve on, according to Gilliland, but he trusts the process, and they will be back at work this week. Despite the slow start by the defensive, they were able to "flip the switch" and start making plays on the field, including a couple of interceptions and a fumble.
Offensively, there was strong plays from all facets of the game, as there was a long run for a touchdown and a passing score.
With one more scrimmage forthcoming on Saturday, Aug. 19, the UWA staff will take this week to work on response and reaction time between plays plus putting an emphasis on special teams.
"There's a lot of 'away from the play' situations that we will work with our special teams this week with a specific emphasis on substitutions," said Gilliland.
UWA will host another scrimmage on Aug. 19 at 10 a.m. from Tiger Stadium. The event is free and open to the public.
