LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Volleyball team continues their quest for a win in Gulf South Conference play with a critical matchup against Lee University on Tuesday and then a non-conference matchup against Stillman College on Wednesday.
First serve against Lee set for Tuesday is set for 5:00 p.m. in Pruitt Hall, while Wednesday's match against Stillman is slated for 6:00 p.m. Tuesday's match against the Flames will also be a red-out for UWA.
West Alabama (1-13, 0-5 GSC) has faced a tough stretch to start their season, struggling to find their rhythm offensively and defensively. Their most recent match saw them fall to Montevallo, as they continue to look for their second win of the season. Despite their record, there have been bright spots in individual performances, particularly from sophomore
Jaida Alvin and freshman
KB Kinney.
Alvin has been the Tigers' standout attacker, recording 95 kills on the year and averaging 2.16 kills per set. However, Alvin's attack percentage of .061 indicates room for improvement in efficiency. Kinney has been emerging as a strong complementary player, with 65 kills this season and a team-leading 1.90 points per set. Setter
Taylor Lamontagne has been vital in orchestrating the offense, leading the team with 199 assists and averaging 5.10 assists per set.
On defense,
Maggie Roddam and Alvin have been solid contributors with 118 and 99 digs, respectively. West Alabama's blocking presence is led by
Gracie Huver, who has recorded 22 total blocks, with help from
Cloe Bonvillain, who has added 12 blocks. The team will need to strengthen its defense to contend with opponents who have out-blocked them 76-55 this season.
Opponent Previews:
Lee University (8-9, 2-3 GSC) enters Tuesday's match looking to improve their conference record. Lee's attack is led by Sara Palumbo, who has tallied 198 kills on a .228 hitting percentage. With strong play from setter Berra Soyler (455 assists) and defensive standout Izzy Denton (251 digs), the Flames will present a tough test for West Alabama, especially with their balanced offense and strong serving game (141 aces this season).
Stillman College (5-13, 4-4) will meet West Alabama on Wednesday. The Tigers of Stillman have struggled with consistency, hitting at just a .048 percentage this season. However, they have a dangerous server in Jaidyn Lowe, who has racked up 40 aces. West Alabama's defense will need to be sharp to limit Stillman's service game and capitalize on their opponent's high error rate (425 attack errors). Stillman is West Alabama's only win in the season, winning 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-21, & 25-16) in Tuscaloosa back in September.
West Alabama will need a strong collective effort to secure victories in these matches as they aim to turn their season around. The first serve against Lee is set for Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at Pruitt Hall, with another home matchup against Stillman set for Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
