LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama men's basketball team (2-1) is set to host Virginia University of Lynchburg on Sunday, looking to build on their strong start to the season. After a dominant 106-52 victory over John Melvin, the Tigers are poised to continue their balanced attack against the Dragons, who are searching for their first win of the year.
West Alabama has showcased efficient shooting through three games, converting 52% of their field goals and an impressive 44.1% from three-point range. The Tigers have averaged 69.5 points per game while holding opponents to just 59.0, thanks to their defensive prowess.
Guard
Jaylen Lemons leads the Tigers' offense, averaging 12.5 points per game while hitting 5-of-13 from beyond the arc. Fellow guard
Marcellious Lockett has been a reliable scorer as well, averaging 11.5 points on 57.1% shooting, including 6-of-11 from three-point range. Forward
Caleb McGill has provided consistent interior scoring with 9.5 points per game and brings versatility on both ends of the floor.
The Tigers have also been dominant on the boards, averaging 29.5 rebounds per game, led by
Michael McIntosh and
Rasean Frederick. McIntosh has been a key contributor, averaging 8.5 points and 5.0 rebounds, while Frederick has chipped in with 9.0 points per game in one appearance off the bench and one as a starter.
Virginia University of Lynchburg (0-4) has struggled offensively this season, averaging 58.5 points per game on 34.7% shooting. Despite their challenges, the Dragons have a standout performer in LeNijel Robinson, who averages 23.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting 60% from three-point range. Terrance Johnson adds 12.0 points per game, while Saveon Jackson contributes 9.7 points, primarily from the free-throw line, where he shoots 81%.
West Alabama's defense will look to contain Robinson and limit the Dragons' three-point shooting, which has been inconsistent at 30.5%. The Tigers' ability to force turnovers, averaging 16.5 points off turnovers per game, could be a decisive factor against a Lynchburg team that averages 15.5 turnovers per contest.
The game tips off Sunday, November 17th at 2:00 p.m. at Pruitt Hall. The Tigers aim to extend their winning streak to three games and establish momentum as the season progresses.
