BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Men's Basketball graduate senior CJ Melton has been recognized as one of the five members of the Gulf South Conference's All-Academic Men's Basketball team after a stellar season on and off the court.
In order to be named to the GSC All-Academic team, nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better their entire academic career at their institution and may not be a freshman or first-term transfer. The student-athlete must also be a significant contributor to the team. Other factors include leadership, community service and extracurricular activities. Institutions are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
Melton started all 30 games for the Tigers in his senior season and averaged eight points with a team-high seven rebounds per game. The graduate senior also led UWA in steals and blocks in his final season with 35 and 16, respectively.
The Birmingham, Alabama native secured three double-doubles on the year, including a career-high 19-point and 11-board performance against Auburn Montgomery on Nov. 30.
Off the court, Melton earned his bachelor's degree in computer information systems.
Melton is currently working on his master's degree in continuing education at UWA and plans to finish his degree at UAB in management information systems with an emphasis in business analytics.
