Women's Rodeo Wins Third Straight Ozark Region Title; Take Gold at Northwest Mississippi

SENATOBIA, Miss. – The University of West Alabama women's rodeo team will defend its national title from 2023 after securing a third straight Ozark Region Championship with a first place at the Northwest Mississippi Rodeo, hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College, over the weekend. 

In 10 meets, the Tigers secured six first place finishes and ran away with the region standings. Finishing with 3,525 points, West Alabama had an over 1,300-point margin between themselves and Pearl River Community College. 

Jaylie Matthews took gold in the barrel racing with a 26.66 average between her two attempts.

Ashley Henderson earned second place with a 6.1 average at the breakaway roping event. 

Joanna Hammett posted an average of 13.7 in the goat tying to earn second place. 

The 2024 College National Finals Rodeo will begin on Sunday, June 9 and run through Friday, June 13 from the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, Wyoming. More information will be provided at a later date.
