LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The No. 12 West Alabama women's tennis team and the UWA men's squad are set to wrap up their regular seasons on Saturday, April 19, with a non-conference matchup against Saint Leo. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Pensacola, Florida.
The Tigers enter the regular season finale riding high, with the women's team (13-5, 8-0 GSC) having clinched the Gulf South Conference regular season championship for the sixth consecutive year. UWA will now look to fine-tune its lineup and carry momentum into the postseason against a tough Saint Leo program.
No. 12 UWA Women's Tennis
Leading the charge for the women is
Alexa Milliam, who owns an unbeaten 15-0 singles record, including an 11-0 mark at the No. 2 position and a flawless 7-0 against conference opponents. Milliam has also shined in doubles alongside
Emiri Takanishi, with the duo posting a perfect 13-0 record, all in the No. 2 slot.
UWA's doubles lineup has been dominant across the board, winning 38 of 49 total matches and compiling a 19-2 record in GSC play. The pair of
Shaira Rivera and
Valentina Mutilba brings additional strength with a 13-3 mark, while
Greta Zawels and
Lolita Hukasian are 8-3 overall.
In singles, Rivera (11-5), Zawels (11-5), and Mutilba (10-6) add depth and experience, helping the Tigers post a collective 63-35 singles record, including 32-10 in conference matches.
UWA Men's Tennis
On the men's side, West Alabama (6-12, 2-6 GSC) looks to close the season strong after a challenging stretch in conference play.
Federico Iturbe and
Jacob Tapia have emerged as a bright spot in doubles, combining for a 10-3 record, including a 3-1 mark in GSC action.
In singles, Tapia leads the way with a 7-6 record, winning four straight, while
Tomas Almeida and
Vilislav Bonev each hold seven wins as well. Iturbe has also found late-season success, posting a 7-4 singles mark, with three consecutive wins heading into the weekend.
Saint Leo Women's Tennis
The Lions (13-8, 4-5 SSC) have put together a balanced singles effort across the lineup, led by Camila Keller, who boasts a 12-2 record, including a dominant 10-0 run at the No. 4 spot and a 7-1 mark in SSC play. Kamilya Shailina (10-7, 5-4 SSC) has also been a key contributor, particularly in the middle of the lineup.
In doubles, Saint Leo has been sharp, compiling a 38-22 team record. Shailina and Luzia Obermeier have been the most consistent duo, going 10-3 overall with a 6-2 record in conference play, while the pairing of Keller and Claudia Borbon Roca has added an 11-4 mark.
No. 8 Saint Leo Men's Tennis
With a deep and experienced roster, Saint Leo's men (17-6, 6-1 SSC) have been dominant in both singles and doubles. Eduardo Cohenleads the singles charge with a 13-1 record, including a perfect 5-0 in conference play and a six-match winning streak. Kodai Kato (14-5, 5-0 SSC) and Luis Iriarte (9-1, 5-0 SSC) have been equally reliable, giving the Lions strength throughout the lineup.
In doubles, Cohen and Kato have formed a formidable duo, going 11-5 overall and 4-1 in SSC competition. Meanwhile, Cohen has also teamed up with Theo Renoux for a perfect 5-0 mark.
Saturday's match serves as a final tune-up before the GSC Tennis Championships begin next week, where the UWA women will enter as the tournament's top seed and men's enters as a seven seed
