LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After delivering a dominant performance in West Alabama's Gulf South Conference opener, freshman right-hander Blake Westry has been named the GSC Freshman of the Week.
Westry earned the honor following his standout outing in the Tigers' 2-1 victory over Mississippi College on February 14. The freshman was electric on the mound, tossing 5.0 shutout innings while allowing just one hit and one walk. He struck out three and faced only 17 batters in the win, helping secure West Alabama's conference-opening victory.
Westry was efficient throughout the afternoon, throwing 73 pitches and keeping the Choctaws off balance from the first inning to his final out. His performance set the tone in what turned into a tightly contested pitchers' duel, as the Tigers improved to 10-0 on the season.
On the year, Westry has been a key piece of West Alabama's pitching staff. In three appearances, including two starts, he owns a 1-0 record with a stellar 0.71 ERA over 12.2 innings. He has allowed just one earned run on eight hits while striking out nine and holding opponents in check in critical moments.
Westry opened the season with a 2.2-inning appearance at Columbus State before firing five shutout innings against Augusta. His latest outing against Mississippi College marked his most dominant performance yet, lowering his season ERA and further solidifying his role in the Tigers' rotation.
As a staff, West Alabama continues to thrive behind strong pitching performances, and Westry's emergence has played a major role in the Tigers' historic start.
West Alabama returns to action this week as it continues Gulf South Conference play as they go down the road to take on Auburn-Montgomery for a three-game series, starting on Friday, February 20th at 3 PM.
