LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team returns home for a pair of rematches against Mississippi College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Delta State on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
No. 18 UWA (18-3, 13-2 GSC) enters the week off the heels of their second conference loss of the year, coming against Lee. Mississippi College (9-11, 6-8 GSC) enters the week on a three-game losing streak with their latest loss coming to AUM at home. As for Delta State (8-11, 5-9 GSC), they come into the week after a seven-point loss to Montevallo.
After an uncharacteristic performance against Lee on Saturday, the Tigers are looking to get back on track against the Choctaws and Statesmen. In their loss to the Flames, West Alabama shot a season-low 32 percent from the field while allowing Lee to shoot 53 percent. UWA's emotional double overtime win against Trevecca Nazarene, that took place two days before, seemed to have an effect on the Tigers as they came out flat from the tip on Saturday.
After last week's results, West Alabama is now averaging 78.7 points per game while holding opposing teams to 64.2 points. Rasean Frederick remains the leading scorer for UWA as the Redshirt Senior brings in an average of 12.1 points into Thursday's game against MC. Elliot Tulip and Caleb Parr are close behind with 11.4 PPG and 11.3 PPG, respectively.
BJ Brown Jr. flashed all of his tools in the Tigers' win over the Trojans, recording his first career triple-double with 12-points, 10-rebounds, and 10 assists. The quartet of Frederick, Tulip, Parr, and Christian Thompson combined for 74 points while Jakobe Singleton added 13 points off the bench. West Alabama's offensive performance against Trevecca is a better example of what the Tigers bring to the table. They'll look to prove that their performance against Lee is an anomaly, by bouncing back against MC and DSU this week.
Mississippi College has been without their best player, Marcel Bridges, since mid December. Without Bridges, the Choctaws are 3-7 and are being outscored by an average of six points during that span. In Bridges' absence, true freshman Phil Nelson has emerged as the top guy for the Choctaws. Nelson is averaging 15.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game on 49 | 42 | 75 percent shooting splits.
Alongside Nelson is Avaughn Johnson. Johnson has been dominant in the painted area for MC. The junior Guard is nearly averaging a double-double with 14.7 points and 9.8 rebounds while shooting 47 percent from the floor. Johnson has taken his game to another level with Bridges on the sidelines, averaging 19.3 points and 11.8 rebounds per game in the last 10 games. In the first meeting against the Tigers, the junior recorded 13 points and eight rebounds.
As a team Mississippi College is averaging 75.5 points per game while allowing 79.6 points. In the first matchup between UWA and MC, West Alabama neutralized the Choctaws' offense, holding them to 53 points on 38.8 percent shooting to cruise to a 77-53 win in Clinton.
For Delta State, they're all about shooting the three. The Statesmen shoot the three-ball more than any team in the South Region. This season, DSU has shot 626 threes, making them at a 31.5 percent clip. While their game is built around the three-point shot, Delta State is only averaging 70.2 points per game which is second to last in the GSC.
Dacory Porter and Bryce Clayton are the Statesmen's go-to options on the offensive end. Porter leads the team in scoring and assists with 15.9 points and 3.4 dimes per game on 51 percent shooting. Porter is one of the only guards on DSU's roster that doesn't rely on the three ball as he's only taken 49 this season. In the first matchup against West Alabama, the 6'4" Guard scored a team-high 21 points on 6-15 shooting.
While Porter likes to attack the defense within the three-point line, Clayton is fully focused on hunting threes. Clayton is a 6'4" Guard who has taken 146 threes this season, making them at a 38.4 percent clip. The junior is one of the best shooters in the conference and someone who will be on UWA's scouting report. Clayton is averaging 13.1 points this year on a 44 | 38 | 91 percent shooting split.
In the first meeting between UWA and DSU this season, the Tigers held the Statesmen to 51 points and four made threes. The three-point tally will be a key stat to watch on Saturday.
Tip-off for Thursday's game against Mississippi College is set for 7:30 p.m. while Saturday's game is slated for 4:00 p.m.
