LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's tennis team returns to Gulf South Conference play on Tuesday, March 17, as the Tigers host Auburn Montgomery at 2 p.m. at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
West Alabama enters the matchup with a 5-3 overall record and is looking to pick up its first conference win of the season after opening GSC play at 0-1. Auburn Montgomery comes into the contest at 4-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The Tigers have been strong in singles play this season, compiling a 25-15 overall record across the lineup.
Afonso Portugal leads the team with a 5-2 singles mark and carries a two-match winning streak, including a 1-0 record in conference play.
Jacob Tapia also holds a 5-3 record this spring, including a 3-2 mark at the No. 2 position.
Gabriel Garay has primarily competed at the top of the lineup for UWA, posting a 4-3 overall record with a 2-2 mark at No. 1 singles.
Federico Iturbe has also been a key contributor, going 4-2 overall with a perfect 3-0 record at the No. 4 position while adding time at No. 5 singles.
Depth has been another strength for West Alabama, with
Maksim Goncharov posting a 1-1 record at No. 4 singles, while
Itaru Kikuchi remains undefeated with a 3-0 mark at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles play, the Tigers have combined for a 13-11 overall record. The pairing of Tapia and Iturbe has led the way with a 5-3 mark and enters Tuesday on a three-match winning streak. Portugal and Goncharov have also been productive together, posting a 4-1 record while winning their last two matches.
Auburn Montgomery enters the contest with a 21-32 singles record on the season. Giuseppe Bonaiuti has led the Warhawks with a 4-4 mark while playing primarily at No. 1 singles. Lucas Rosvall has been another consistent performer, holding a 3-2 overall record with wins across multiple positions.
In doubles, the Warhawks are 13-17 overall, with Bonaiuti and Jami Savolainen leading the lineup with a 5-2 record together, including a 5-2 mark at the No. 1 position.
First serve between the Tigers and Warhawks is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
