Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Georgia ousted West Alabama from the 2013 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Tournament and ended the Tigers season with a 3-0 straight-set victory over UWA Friday at the UWF Fieldhouse.
West Georgia defeated UWA 25-20, 25-17, 25-15 to improve to its record to 16-13 heading into a Saturday semi-final match against North Alabama. West Alabama ends its season at 12-18.
"Obviously, this is not the ending we wanted for this season, but I couldn't be more proud of this team," UWA head coach
Jordan Lay said. "We had a heck of a season and I am proud of what we were able to accomplish. If nothing else, we can remember this feeling as we head into next year."
Yanesha Johnson and
Carly Wehling had nine and six kills, respectively, to pace the UWA attack. Wehling also chipped in 14 assists and 12 digs in her final match as a Tiger.
Cynthia Smith recorded a team-high 14 digs.
"I need to say thanks to our seniors, Carly (Wehling) and Cynthia (Smith). They set a precedent with their attitude and effort for future UWA teams," Lay said after wrapping up his first season as the Tigers head coach. "We are looking forward to the offseason and getting better every day. There is a bright future for our program."
Lesley Bemis recorded 11 kills to lead the Wolves attack, followed by Emily Reul with nine. Amanda Miller had 27 assists. Bemis had six block assists as West Georgia controlled the net with a 10-1 blocking advantage.
